History of Everton House
Everton House is a spectacular heritage home in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The land upon which Everton House sits today was originally owned by the Imperial Government and was known as the Royal Engineers’ Quarters. In 1891, John Bemister of Harbour Grace purchased the land, and construction began on the magnificent home he called Everton House.
The beautiful home remained in Bemister’s family for many years. His daughter Hannah inherited it after his death and lived there with her family until 1931.
The home was soon thereafter purchased by William Hynes, a wealthy coal merchant who valued it’s location in the historic Merchant’s District of St. John’s. Hynes and his family lived in Everton House until 1945, when it was put up for sale. Gerald Hynes (son of William) had made an offer on the house but was outbid by H.S. Wilburforce Winsor, who secured the stunning home for $20,000.
Despite the scarcity of materials and craftsmen after the 2nd World War, Winsor undertook a massive renovation and restoration project on the house. It took him 2 years and $60,000, but the result was fabulous.
The Winsor family lived at Everton House until 1988 when it was sold to Dr. and Mrs. Flynn. The Flynn’s adored the home and saw it as an ideal place to raise their four children. In 1995 the Flynn’s hired local architect Robert Mellin to lead a massive renovation project that would almost double the available space in the home. Paying close attention to the lines and style of the old home, Mellin’s contributions to the home would result in a brilliant fusion of old and new.
Today the home has been converted into a first class Bed & Breakfast offering comfortable, luxurious accommodations and facilities for private dinners, parties, meetings, weddings, and receptions.
